Repeal the Tax Hike

Tracy Begins Petition Drive to Repeal Largest Tax Hike in
Illinois History

Quincy, IL…In response to the recent passage of a 67% tax hike by the previous lame-duck General Assembly, State Representative Jil Tracy (R-Quincy) has begun a petition drive to repeal the tax increase which many have said will unfairly burden middle class families and drive jobs out of state.

“Just the process by which this massive tax increase was passed leaves a lot to be desired,” said Rep. Tracy referring to the tax hike that was passed in the final hours of the 96th General Assembly with 12 lame duck votes in the Senate and House.

“I don’t believe that if a vote was held today on the same tax increase legislation it would have enough support to pass.  There were a number of new members elected in November who campaigned against a tax hike and who the people of Illinois selected to be their voice in Springfield.  That voice was ignored by the lame duck General Assembly and the interests of Illinois voters was not represented with the passage of this tax increase,” said Tracy.

Representative Tracy has signed on as a co-sponsor of House Bill 175, which would repeal the recently passed tax increases and set rates back to previous levels.  The following provisions are contained in the repeal legislation:

  • Individual income tax rolled back to 3% (is 5.0%);
  • Corporate income tax rolled back to 4.8% (is 7.0%);
  • Income tax loss carry forwards restored for 2011-2014;
  • Illinois estate tax (death tax) repealed/rolled back to 0.0% (is 6.8%-16.0%, depending on the size of the estate);
  • Local governments get their 10% set-aside restored; and
  • The Governor's power to “reserve” State appropriations, and pre-empt spending is repealed.

“The majority of constituents I have spoken with don’t want this tax hike, the business community and employers have expressed serious concerns of the effects this tax increase will have on our economy and I simply don’t feel that higher taxes will solve our fiscal crisis,” said Tracy.  “The problem has never been that our taxes are too low in Illinois, the problem is that state government has spent too much.”
