Springfield , IL …State Representative Jill Tracy introduced,
and advanced her first bill today during the House Committee on Criminal
Law, Judiciary II. The proposed legislation aims at cracking down on
using false, fictitious or unlawfully altered identification for purchasing
methamphetamine ingredients.
“I have been concerned with preventing the manufacture and
use of methamphetamine since my experience with this issue over 10
years ago while working as an Assistant Attorney General. It’s
gratifying for me to be able to address one more aspect of the methamphetamine
problem with my first bill. Recent laws have limited the amount of
methamphetamine precursors that can be purchased. Because identification
is now required to purchase these items, the use of fake or false identification
cards to purchase psuedophedrin has been on the rise. This problem
was brought to my attention at a hearing I held last summer with various
agencies working to prevent methamphetamine use said Representative
Tracy. House bill 174 addresses a specific situation that had not been
addressed in the original Methamphetamine Precursor Control Act. .
Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Bruce Lacey testified on behalf
of HB 174 stating that the use of false identification has become a
known way to get around the measures of the current methamphetamine
precursor law. Master Sergeant Lacey had been the officer who previously
reported this problem to Tracy “This would give us a more effective
tool in combating the numerous meth problems in Illinois ,” said
Sergeant Lacey.
Also in support of Representative Tracy’s first bill were fellow
House Republicans David Reis (R-108 th District), Bill Black (R-104
th District), Roger Eddy (R-109 th District), and Sandra Pihos (R-42
nd District) and downstate Demorcrat Representatives John Bradley (D-117
th District) and Brandon Phelps (D-118 th District).
“I introduced this bill to assist our law enforcement officials
in their ongoing battle with the methamphetamine crisis. The Methamphetamine
Percursor Control Act has been a successful weapon in the battle and
this addition will be a boost to protect the citizens of Illinois .
I am glad to have support from both parties behind House Bill 174,” said
Representative Tracy.
