June 27, 2008

Quincy, IL…Families and residents of Adams and Hancock Counties who have been victims of the recent floods can now begin to apply for federal assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). On Thursday, State Representative Jil Tracy announced that Adams and Hancock Counties have officially been declared federal disaster areas, meaning residents will be eligible for individual assistance.

“The residents of Adams and Hancock Counties whose homes or businesses were damaged or destroyed by the recent flood can now apply for federal funds in order to rebuild, repair and cleanup their property. This will truly help those most devastated by the flood waters and hopefully alleviate some of the financial stress associated with these types of disasters,” said Rep. Tracy.

Federal grants of up to $28,800 will be available to help with clean-up and recovery efforts, including:

  • Repair or replacement of a flood-damaged home, including the structure (foundation, roof and outside walls);
  • Heating, air conditioning systems and other utilities;
  • Septic or sewage systems and well or other water systems;
  • Temporary housing, including moving and storage costs;
  • Purchase of clean-up items (wet/dry vacuums, fans)
  • Medical and dental expenses;
  • Repair, cleaning or replacement of damaged household items and clothes;
  • Fuel and transportation costs; and
  • The cost of a flood insurance policy through the National Flood Insurance Program.

In order to apply for assistance residents should call the FEMA Hotline at 800-621-FEMA, or register online at www.fema.gov/assistance

If you need additional assistance please call Rep. Tracy’s office at (217) 223-0833
