Tracy Concerned About Governor’s Cuts in DNR Budget

Springfield, IL – State Representative Jil Tracy is concerned that the Governor’s proposed budget cuts in the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will create havoc in the agency and state parks.

Governor Blagojevich’s proposed Fiscal Year 2009 budget for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) cuts more than $27 million in General Revenue Funds, replacing them with other dedicated funds paid for by user fees.  Representative Tracy is worried that this will lead to higher fees and a cutback of services at various state parks around Illinois.

“Cutbacks in this agency will hinder all the agency’s  functions” Tracy said. Our state parks are treasures that need to be properly preserved for tourism and family recreation opportunities.  Siloam Springs, Weinburg King and Jim Edgar Panther Creek are wonderful facilities, but their staffs are already reduced to the minimal staffs for proper maintenance and operation.

DNR has said there will be no layoffs for employees who were on the state payroll at the end of 2007.  I’m hopeful that this is the truth, but you can never be sure about anything with this administration.”

The FY09 proposed budget for DNR will rely more heavily on money from dedicated funds, including those funded by license fees paid by hunters and anglers.  Tracy does not want to see any increases in those license fees and is questioning the Blagojevich Administration’s commitment to our state parks and natural resources.

“DNR has been overseen by an acting director for several years now,” said Tracy.  “Meanwhile, the hours of operation at our state parks have been cut back and routine maintenance has been hindered because of lack of funds and staff.  This budget does not seem to place a priority on taking care of our precious natural resources.  Once again, I favor not expanding programs as the Governor has proposed but taking care of our existing programs. ”
